Indiana has the smallest share of this lake compared to any other U.S. state that borders it. That said, the state’s recent shoreline development (riprap and breakwaters) has launched great smallie fishing.

With unpredictable weather forecasts, there were twelve fishermen who mustered up the courage to head out to the lake. Wind, down pouring rain and cold didn’t stop fish from being caught. This tournament proved that quality rather than quantity was the key for many of the anglers. The first place team of Joe Chiarella and Rich Hulen brought in five fish weighing 17.69 lbs. The second place team of Zack Seyller and Kevin Seyller brought back three fish that weighed 10.31 lbs. The winners of the big bass award for the tournament, weighing 4.52 lbs., went to the team of Scott Stutler and John Blunk.
We also want to thank Solar Bat Sunglasses and Windy City ThunderBolts for donating to our raffles. We had two drawings for Solar Bat Sunglasses and one drawing for ThunderBolts tickets. Our winners of the Solar Bat Sunglasses went to Sam Beck and John Blunk. The winner of the ThunderBolts tickets went to Ed Czerwinski.

Throughout the week the weather looked promising and Mother Nature came through with a pleasant day on the water. Boats started stacking up early in the morning when twenty-four anxious anglers came with their game faces on. The top three places came in with hefty bags. The first place team of Joe Chiarella and Rich Hulen topped the scales at 19.33 lbs. The second place team of Brian Jackson and Mike Myers weighed in 18.44 lbs. of smallies. After identical weight (17.64 lbs.) and big bass (3.94 lbs.), two teams tied for third place honors. One team is Rick Coleman and Tashko Vraniskoski and the other team is Ross Tornabene and Tim Griefer. We want to thank all our teams for putting in the effort and coming out to compete in tournament action.

2018 Big Lake Shoot Out
5/19/18 By Zack Seyller
Saturday morning brought nine boats and eighteen excited anglers to East Chicago Marina for a chance to dominate The Big Lake Shoot Out. Throughout the eight hour event, the annoying drizzle and rain at times didn’t give way to every boat bringing in a limit of smallmouth bass. The winning plaques went to Ross Tornabene (third consecutive year) and his partner Tim Greifer. Their sack of fish topped the scales at 18.12 lbs. Robby and Jason Revant took the honors of second place with 15.96 lbs. The team of Scott Stutler and Stan Zatorski came in with the big bass of the tournament weighing 5.19 lbs. We want to thank everyone for taking the time to come out and compete on one of the greatest smallmouth fisheries in the U.S. Our next tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 16th at 5:15 at East Chicago Marina.

What an amazing day to be on the water. The weather was perfect and the fishing cooperated pretty well also. Eighteen fishermen came out to try their hand in taking home the winning check. However, there was only one team who succeeded in doing so and that team was Sam Beck and Ed Czerwinski. Their winning bag of fish weighed 15.53 lbs. Taking home second place honors was the team of Brian Jackson and Jeff Eatinger with 15.06 lbs. The team of Zack Seyller and Kevin Seyller brought in the big bass of the tournament weighing 4.35 lbs. We want to thank all of our anglers for putting in the effort and coming out to compete in tournament action.

We couldn’t ask for a better day to be on The Big Lake. With very little to no wind, meant the anglers were coming out for a good time today. Eighteen fishermen tried their hand in catching the big bag of fish but only a couple of full sacks came to the scales. Larry Fenzau and Mike Jones led the charge in first place with a weight of 15.33 lbs. They also hooked the big bass of the tournament at 4.49 lbs. In second place, Jeff Miller and Al Huhra weighing in a bag of 14.71 lbs. of bass. We want to thank all our anglers for putting in the time and effort it takes to come out and compete in tournament action.
We also want to thank Solar Bat Sunglasses for donating to our raffle this week. We had two drawings for the Solar Bat Sunglasses. Our winners of the Solar Bat Sunglasses went to Jeff Miller and Al Huhra.
